The Smartbox

The Smartbox

I embarked on this journey early in 2024. At first, only my family and close friends could understand what I was trying to communicate. To be an independent adult with a disability, it’s crucial to express your needs and wants—whether it’s asking for a hamburger, making a new friend, or seeking computerized assistance. I was on the lookout for a digital device to help me communicate more effectively. That’s when I was introduced to the Smartbox, an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device designed to support individuals who have difficulty using speech. Simply put, if I were Ironman, Smartbox would be my Jarvis.

Since I started using my Smartbox over the summer, it’s been incredible to finally share all the ideas in my head. I can now surf the web, send emails, order items online, and even control the television. I can listen to podcasts and watch RedZone to catch all the football action on Sundays. This device has truly opened up new opportunities for my independence.

There’s one more feature I’m trying to figure out: how to text friends and family. I’m in contact with the Smartbox representative and will keep you updated on our progress.
